Hillsborough County wraps around Old Tampa Bay and Tampa Bay on the western edge of central Florida. At the time of the 2010 census, Hillsborough County had a population of 1,229,226. It's the fourth most populated county in Florida, and Tampa, the largest city is its county seat. Hillsborough County is considered to be in the Tampa-Saint Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. There are only three cities in the incorporated area of Hillsborough County: Plant City, Tampa, and Temple Terrace. Hillsborough County is named for the Earl of Hillsborough, Wills Hill who was the British Secretary of State for the colonies in the late 1700s.
