Hudson Information and Highlights

Hudson, Florida is a census-designated place which is located in Pasco County. A census-designated place, or CDP, is a concentration of population that is identified by the United States Census Bureau for statistical purposes. CDPs do not have their own municipal government, but they do serve as the statistical counterparts of incorporated places like cities, towns, and villages. Most municipal functions for Hudson like schools, electricity, and the like are now provided by Pasco County, although this wasn’t always the case. In the past, things like public lights, schools, beaches, and even the fire department, airport, and cemetery were created and maintained by groups of citizens working together.

Hudson, Florida started when Isaac Hudson went looking for better farmland and brought two wagons and a herd of cows to the area. Hudson founded the town in 1878 when he allowed his house to be used as a post office, in a similar manner to how Port Richey was founded. After Hudson’s arrival, other settlers followed. As new arrivals came to town, established settlers welcomed them and helped them to build their homes and make the household items that they would need for their day to day life.

During various phases in its history, different modes of transportation have played important roles in Hudson’s economy. Initially, shipping was the primary method of commerce. In 1905, the Fivay Railroad was built and there was a depot near Hudson Springs. The railroad played an important role in the area’s economy until US 19 was constructed in the 1940’s and truck transportation increased in popularity around the 1950’s.

In the 1930's Hudson's most famous landmark, the Hudson Resort Hotel was built. The hotel brought travelers, hunters, fishermen, and Major League Baseball players to the area. Perhaps the most famous guest at the hotel was Babe Ruth, who enjoyed going out fishing with the locals. The hotel no longer exists, but its legend lives on in the local history.

In the mid 1950's a group of Hudson and Pasco businessmen made a plan to dig canals that would bring the waters of the Gulf into people's backyards as part of an ambitious real estate development scheme. These men built the canals that we have in the town today and sold lots in various developments along them.

Hudson began a period of rapid growth in the 1990s, and the population has since stabilized. The population of Hudson is currently around thirteen thousand people. In February 2005, the New Hudson Channel opened, making Hudson the northernmost deepwater port before the big bend of FL's west coast.
