Lee County is in the Cape Coral-Fort Myers metropolitan area of Florida. The largest city in the county is Cape Coral, and the county seat is Fort Myers. At the time of the 2010 census the population of Lake County with 618,754. In 1887, Lee County was created from Monroe County, and was named for Robert E. Lee a Confederate general in the Civil War. Lake county is about 120 miles south of Tampa at the juncture where the Gulf of Mexico and Caloosahatchee River meet. Fort Lauderdale lies 115 miles to the east-southeast via Interstate 75. Miami is east-southeast via Highway 41. The county has a total area of 1,212 square miles of which 780 square miles is land and 428 square miles is water. The climate of the area falls somewhere between tropical and subtropical. The winters in Lake County are warm and short; the summers are long and hot. Most of the rainfall occurs from June to September. Temperatures can rise to almost 100 degrees during the summer and can drop to near freezing in the winter. The average daily temperature in August is only 83 degrees.
