Pinellas County is located in the state of Florida and its county seat is Clearwater. The county is 38 miles long and 15 miles wide and has 587 miles of coastline. Originally Pinellas County was inhabited by the Native American tribe of the Tocobaga Indians who built a town and a large temple mound that overlooked what is now Safety Harbor. Explorer Panfilo de Narvaez and explorer Hernando de Soto explored the area around the year 1528. The Tocobaga tribe fell victim to European diseases, because they had no immunity to them, and we're virtually wiped-out by the early eighteenth century. Subsequent Spanish explorers named the area Punta Pinal meaning “point of pines” or “piney point”. The area of Pinellas County went back and forth several times between control of the British and Spanish with the Spanish finally succeeding Florida to the United States and 1821. The United States army established Fort Brooke which later became Tampa in 1823. There was a land boom in the early 1920s that included Pinellas County. During prohibition the peninsula's countless inlets and Islands were havens for rumrunners bringing in liquor from Cuba. The heavily wooded areas in the county provided ample cover for moonshiners. The real estate boom collapsed in 1926 but growth begin again after the end of World War II. An army training school had been operated in the area and many of the soldiers remembered fondly the Pinellas area where they had trained and returned as tourists or residents after the war. Heritage Village is a 21-acre living history museum operated by the county. It contains more than 28 historic structures, some dating back to the 19th century. Visitors can experience what life must have been like in Pinellas at an earlier time. There's never a shortage of recreational activities in the area. Family friendly places include the Tranquil Sunken Gardens, Florida Botanical Gardens, and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Close by are Busch Gardens and the Disney parks. Children enjoy the Great Explorations Children's Museum. The area has a vibrant nightlife with events and festivities almost every weekend.
