Port Richey is a city in Pasco County, Florida. The city is located within the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Approximately three thousand people live in Port Richey, which has an area of just under three square miles. In 1883, Aaron M. Richey sailed from St. Joseph, Missouri to an area near the mouth of the Pithlachascotee river. He needed a place to live and a dock to moor his schooner, so he purchased a small piece of river front property from a member of the Clark family and named it "Port Richey."
Aaron M. Richey later opened a post office in his home, as well as a general store in the area. Settlers began to move into the area, as news of the mild winters and abundant fish and game in the area reached the northern states.
Today, there is still plenty of fishing in Port Richey. The city serves as a port for commercial fishermen while maintaining plenty of picturesque seaside charm. The town’s population remained quite small, around several hundred people, until the last couple of decades brought a dramatic increase in the number of people who call Port Richey home.
Port Richey is located on the Western side of Florida, about halfway down the Gulf Coast. It is close to Tampa, Clearwater, and St Petersburg.
