Sarasota is a county in the middle of the western coast of Florida. Sarasota County was created in 1921 and origins of the name are unknown. Some speculate the county is named after explorer Hernando de Soto's daughter Sara. The name first appeared on a 1763 land grant map as “Zerazote”. Sarasota County lies approximately 60 miles south of Tampa Bay. The county is home to approximately 390,000 permanent residents but the population swells to more than 476,000 during the winter months. There are 37 miles of open shoreline along the Gulf of Mexico in Sarasota County. The county seat for Sarasota County is the town of Sarasota which is also its largest city. Sarasota County has a total area of 725 miles with 556 being land and 169 square miles being water. Sarasota County is in the North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton metropolitan area. The major metropolitan areas of Sarasota County are Sarasota, North Port, Venice, and the town of Longboat.
Over 60% of Sarasota County residents live in unincorporated areas. Adjacent counties are Manatee County to the north, DeSoto County to the east, and Charlotte County to the south. The western edge of the county abuts the Gulf of Mexico. Sarasota County has many local parks and several preserves. In a survey conducted by the county, 90% of respondents rate the quality of life in their neighborhood as excellent or good and 93% are satisfied with county services. Local Siesta Beach has been named America's best beach. In 2013 Forbes Magazine rated Sarasota County as one of the “best cities for jobs”. The county provides fire protection and emergency services to unincorporated areas and some municipalities.
