Seminole County was created in 1913 from the northern part of Orange County by the Florida legislature. The largest city in the county and the county seat is Sanford. At the time of the 2010 census, the population was for 422,718. Seminole County is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford metropolitan area. Seminole County has a total area of 344 square miles of which 309 square miles is land and 36 square miles is water. Adjacent counties are Volusia County to the northeast, Orange County to the south and west, and Lake County to the northwest. Seminole county is named for the people who live throughout the area. The word Seminole is thought to be derived from the Spanish word “cimarron” meaning “wild” or “runaway”.
